THE Rotary Club of Kampala East has honoured Julia Basuta, the founder of Mengo School for the Deaf, with a vocational service award. The award recognises Basuta’s innovativeness and dedication in contributing to this vulnerable group.

THE Rotary Club of Kampala East has honoured Julia Basuta, the founder of Mengo School for the Deaf, with a vocational service award. The award recognises Basuta’s innovativeness and dedication in contributing to this vulnerable group.

Joseph Kigula, the club president, presented the coveted award to Basuta at a function at Hotel Africana.

Kigula said Basuta was award for her contribution in improving the lives of the deaf over the years.

“We want to recognise Basuta for her devotion in spending her entire life supporting the deaf who are one of the less fortunate members of society.

“She has demonstrated a rare skill that many would only cherish, in transforming the lives of these people and making them a better citizen,” Kigula said.

Rotary annually honours special people who have demonstrated special skills and expertise in improving the lives of people.

Basuta described the award as “a very special birthday gift” that she would cherish her entire life. Basuta turned 90 this year.
